Joins the recently formed Association of Russian Etchers. Summer: resides in Yelabuga and Sarapul (a town on the Kama). Paints the picture Evening. November - January 1872: takes part in the first Itinerant exhibition; from then on his creative career is inseparably linked with the Society for Circulating Art Exhibitions. Strikes up a friendship with Ivan Kramskoi, a gifted portraitist and art critic, one of the founders and ideologists of the Itinerant Society.
