Begins a series of charcoal drawings commissioned by Alexander Beggrow, owner of an art shop and lithograph workshop in St. Petersburg. Paints the pictures Amidst the Spreading Vale, Woodlands, Dawn, and Stream, in a Birch Forest. The magazine Vestnik iziashchnykh iskusstv (Herald of Fine Arts, vol. I, issue 1) publishes an article by the art historian and critic Andrei Somov entitled "Shishkin As an Engraver".
